As parents of a Korean-born son with a cleft lip and palate, we are familiar with all you’ve been through. He is now 18, a freshman in college, and is a fabulous young man. His dental ridge repair at age 5 was tough, and at 17 he made the decision on his own to have a final lip and nose revision. He is one tough and determined kid, we think partly because of all he has gone through. Our family recently traveled to Peru as part of a mission to provide free cleft surgery to families who could not afford it, and it made a huge impression on all of us, especially him.

I am also a speech therapist who has been considering fostering and/or adoption for two years now. I am very drawn to children with a cleft palate because I feel like I could be very beneficial to their needs. There is a little guy scheduled to be born in June who has a cleft and Down’s markers. The cleft is, to me, not a big deal but the Down’s gives me pause. I am single and work like a mad woman but I have a big heart and loads of determination! Do you have any advice? And congrats on your perfectly wonderful family!
